Surrounded by the Word

Ever since I was in college I have been posting scriptures all throughout my living space. It began as a necessity when I was struggling through a difficult season of my life where the negative thoughts in my mind were so troubling that I had to physically surround myself with the Word in order to make it through each day. I remember friends and acquaintances coming into my dorm and saying, "What's up with the scriptures all over the walls?" I would try to explain to them my reasonings but they usually just shrugged their shoulders or laughed a little to themselves. Nevertheless, I kept myself surrounded by the Word of God and always knew where to turn when I was going through a personal battle in my life. Some of the scripture posts were on paper that I had printed out using a beautiful font. Other posts were on notecards or colored paper. I can even recall a time when I wrote out each fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23) on a piece of colored paper and posted them on the front of my dresser drawers. Hey, I just did what I had to do!

Deuteronomy 6:4-9 says the following:

4 "Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one.5 You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might.6 And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart.7 You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise.8 You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes.9 You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.

To this day, I still post scriptures throughout my home: on my coffee table, on my refrigerator, at the bottom of my microwave, on my bathroom mirror, and even near my pump. Basically, everywhere that I spend a lot of time. It helps me to keep the Word in front of me and stay encouraged by God's promises. I also take time to speak the scriptures aloud and include them in my prayers.

This week, I encourage you to take some time and write your favorite scriptures on a few notecards, or print them off using your favorite font, or maybe even paint them on a canvas board, and post them throughout your home. Even just posting one scripture on your mirror will be such a great reminder of God's promises for you as you're making up that pretty face or brushing those pearly whites. As you surround yourself with the Word, it will make its home in your heart and spill forth onto your countenance. And that is where true beauty begins.
